Gaze: The poetics and politics of looking

What does it mean to look? What does it mean to be looked at? And what happens when the subject looks back? Grounded in an ethnography of artists and art models and auto-ethnographically drawing from a series of performances at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art’s ‘European Masterpieces from the Metropolitan Museum’ exhibition,  this research explores the politics of looking in contemporary society. In doing so, it examines the philosophical concept of ‘the gaze’ in its various forms (including the male gaze, the ethnographic gaze, the heteronormative gaze, and the colonial gaze), and asks what this means for contemporary anthropological practices and feminism, queer theory, and decolonisation.
